Getting around Newcastle

On foot

The centre of Newcastle between the central train station and main campus is pedestrianized, so the quickest and most pleasant way around the city is often on foot. The campus can be reached in 20 minutes through the city centre, via sights including Grey’s monument, the Theatre Royal, the Laing Art Gallery, the food stalls of Grainger Market (with amazing East Asian food and Mac ‘n’ cheese), and the historic Central Arcade.

By metro

The Tyne and Wear metro system links the central station to the main university campus (Haymarket stop) in under 10 minutes.

Bus

The no. 34 ‘City Loop’ bus links the campus to the city centre (NB. not via the railway station)

If paying in cash, please note that the buses don’t give change.

Taxi

Local taxi firms include:

Notts Cars – 01159 19 19 19

DG Cars – 0115 9 500 500 or online

Nottingham Cars – 0115 9700 700

Car

If arriving by car, please be aware that parking in Newcastle is limited.

There is some Pay and Display visitor parking on campus (the grey area between nos. 16 and 18 on the campus map), an 8-10 minute walk from the conference venue. If you are a blue badge holder, there is ample parking around campus, including a short, step-free distance from Highfield House.

Alternatively, there is a large Park and Ride at the west edge of Nottingham (Toton Lane), which is on an easy tram route to the University Park.
